1. Explain how you feel after returning to campus, or use three words to describe your current emotions after coming back to campus.
Yvonne Cheng: Excited, anxious, and overwhelmed.
Jenny Wang: I am hopeful about the new start, feeling stressed about the move-in, and overwhelmed since it's been a long time.
Selina Shen: I feel excited but also nervous after coming back to campus since after one year of remote learning at my home, it's the first time I had so many people around me.
Jingyi Xu: Overwhelmed, excited, and opportunity.
Yoly Liu: Grateful, invigorated, and cautious.

2. What goal do you want to accomplish during this academic year?
Yvonne Cheng: For the new academic year, my goal is to develop and perfect my counseling skills through an internship, acquire new knowledge from courses offered at Columbia University, and maintain good relationships with my roommates.
Jenny Wang: I hope I can get accepted by the graduate schools that I want to attend, meet someone special, and travel a lot.
Selina Shen: I hope that I could keep both my mental and physical health in good condition throughout this academic year and have a clearer direction about my future path.
Jingyi Xu: My primary goal is to maintain a positive mental state that can support me through challenges and uncertainties. In addition, I would like to explore my interests in higher education and my future vocation in-depth.
Yoly Liu: Stay healthy, both physically and mentally.

3. After coming back to school, what is the most exciting thing that happened to you? What is the most challenging thing that has happened to you?
Yvonne Cheng: The most exciting thing is that I found myself to be more willing to speak in classes and less likely to stay in my comfort zone.
Jenny Wang: The most exciting thing is finally getting to have the overly sweet cookies. They are so sweet, but I love them. The most challenging part is that many of my friends have graduated. The school is full of unfamiliar faces. I am now a senior but feeling like a freshman!
Selina Shen: I think the most exciting thing is to see some of my closest friends again, while the most challenging is that I need to figure out what I want to do after graduation.
Jingyi Xu: The most exciting thing is seeing old and new friends and connecting with people in-person after one and a half years. The most challenging thing is to make good use of the opportunities and resources at HGSE.
Yoly Liu: The most exciting thing is that I am studying an interesting field. I really like the people around me and my schedule as well as the pace and balance between my work and personal life. I am very motivated to improve myself. I need to complete many assignments daily, so taking good care of myself physically and mentally could be a challenge for me.

4. What is one piece of advice you would give someone who might feel the same as you?
Yvonne Cheng: I would say don’t aim for excellence but aim for growth. There is nothing more tiring that trying to fulfill the need and compulsion to be perfect. If you can go home at the end of the day and feel that you have learned something new, then you should be proud of yourself!
Jenny Wang:  Just hang in there. If you believe that positive things can happen, they will happen!
Selina Shen: If you have similar concerns as me, there's one piece of advice I want to share with you: “Be open-minded!” If you are unsure about things, just try it, and then make your decisions.
Jingyi Xu: I would suggest that anyone like me try new things that might interest them by asking questions, connecting with people, and reading.
Yoly Liu: I know that we all experience many challenges due to Covid-19. Don't be afraid to ask for help! Trust me – there will be always someone supporting and helping you! Stay positive and optimistic!
新学期到来啦!开学快乐!
The new academic year has started at Boston College. This week, we invited a special guest —— Yuqi Wang, a Boton College graduate student, to share her online learning experience with us.

Yuqi is studying curriculum and instruction at the Lynch School of Education and Human Development. She joined Dr. Deoksoon Kim’s research team in Fall 2020. Her passionate for curriculum design and language development has sparked her ambition to find engaging ways to teach language skills. You can cintact Yuqi at wangdsl@bc.edu.

While studying at a University in China, Yuqi had planned to teach preschool. However, her plans shifted when multiple academic mentors encouraged her to continue her education abroad. Taking their advice to heart, Yuqi applied to graduate school in the United States and was admitted to Boston College. Unfortunately, Yuqi was unable to physically come to the United States for her graduate studies due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Yuqi initially struggled to adapt to the western educational system. In addition to the general demands of graduate-level academic courses, Yuqi also had to adjust to English language instruction while solving technological problems related to online learning. She felt discouraged and frustrated when professors noted weaknesses in her academic writing.

Despite these initial hurdles, many professors and classmates supported Yuqi throughout the process. Through their encouragement and her own resiliency, Yuqi gradually adjusted to the academic environment.

As Yuqi's confidence continued to grow, she found ways to further challenge herself. For example, she registered for statistics and research-oriented courses and became actively involved in the DK team. Dr. Kim has inspired her to consider applying for a doctoral degree.

Yuqi will graduate in spring 2022. Despite the physical distance, she cherishes her experience at Boston College. Wherever her journey may take her, Yuqi is excited to use her research skills and education to support students.

We wish Yuqi all the very best in her future endeavors!
